go big or go home

I think I need a heart-protection pill after watching episodes 35-39 of Nirvana in Fire.
This was such a roller-coaster. I admit, I was extremely worried for Xia Dong when Xia Jiang said he had rigged the prison in Xuanjing Bureau, but then of course the prisoner wasn’t there after all! And then when Prince Jing started getting heated in the audience with the Emperor, I was like “No Jingyan... calm yourself down!”. But then Prince Yu and Xia Jiang made the incredible error of accusing Consort Jing at that moment.
I have said before that I kind of like the Empress. And I still do! I feel kinda bad for her, even though she is supporting some villains. How was she supposed to know that Consort Jing had created the memorial tablet at the Emperor’s request? Also... did we just find out that Consort Jing has been drugging the Emperor?????
Anyway, from how worried I was at the start of episode 35, I had no idea that this whole scheme would work out so well for Prince Jing’s side??? My brother and I had been talking about how we think the “final boss” of the show has got to be Xia Jiang. But it seems like his fall is sudden and precipitous. Will it stick? And are we really defeating Prince Yu at the same time?
As we left off episode 39 though, Mei Changsu is poisoned and supposedly going to die in 7 days. However, why did they so carefully show us him taking that red pill before being taken into custody? I think it will protect him. If this were The Untamed then it’s at least 75% likely that the red pill meant nothing (obviously I love that show but it made some extremely questionable editing decisions) but NiF is clearly much more carefully plotted. So the pill had to have done something.
Final note — Prince Ji is the best (ok 2nd best behind Meng Zhi)
Final final note — Prince Jing is so worried about Mei Changsu. You’re in love, my friend. Admit it.

Like, you're right, how could she know that the Emperor had decided it was okay if one consort had a memorial tablet for Lin Yueyao?
(Another thing I like is that it's crystal clear that the consorts aren't fighting for the Emperor's love - it's all about power.)
